DURHAM, NC, July 14, 2023 – Hailed by Jazziz magazine as the ”voice of her generation” and a “national treasure,” Chicago-born, Durham, North Carolina-based Dr. Lenora Zenzalai Helm is a top-notch jazz vocal musician, an ebullient composer, an inventive lyricist, an inspiring bandleader and a dedicated educator at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Helm encompasses all of the inventions and dimensions of jazz and the African Diaspora on her new recording, Journeywoman, featuring her Tribe Jazz Orchestra® Nonet. Helm’s new CD, her eighth as a leader, is a compelling 65-minute, multi-movement 12-track work, where she sings about the life of an allegorical woman named Journey, and her struggles with abuse, birth, death, self-definition and her victories through self-love, perseverance and affirmation.

NEW YORK, NY, July 2023 – For the past four decades, the Youngstown, Ohio-born pianist James Weidman has literally been one of the most valuable players on the New York scene, as an indispensable sideman with a wide variety of jazz leaders, from singers Abbey Lincoln and Cassandra Wilson, to Steve Coleman’s iconoclastic M-Base collective to Joe Lovano’s Us Five ensemble. Weidman’s recordings as a leader showcase his profound, propulsive and poetic pianism, as does his long-awaited recording, Sonic Realities, with bassist Harvie S and drummer Alvester Garnett. Weidman sees this project as the latest in a continuum of jazz piano trios that have defined the music.

PITTSBURGH, PA, May 4, 2023 – Ray Brown, Art Blakey, Billy Eckstine, Fatha Hines, Mary Lou Williams, Ahmad Jamal, Stanley Turrentine and Erroll Garner are just a few of the greats who answered the Pittsburgh jazz roll call. Through their music, these sons and daughters of Pittsburgh not only spoke the language, but they also re-invented it, refined it and expanded it through musical conversations across time and place. They understood how the language of jazz connects us, encourages us to remember where we’ve been and where we’re going, and gives voice to our shared community. And, it’s these timeless cross-cultural conversations that will be carried on through the 13th Annual Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival presented by Citizens (PIJF), which returns to the August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) and Highmark Stadium September 14 – 17, 2023.
