PITTSBURGH, PA, October 25, 2022 – Colorado-born, Boston-based alto saxophonist, composer and educator Tia Fuller has been one of the most delightful and distinguished musicians on the jazz scene for two decades. She famously worked and toured with Beyoncé for four years, gigged with a wide range of artists from Aretha Franklin to Esperanza Spalding and provided the saxophone sound and was the model for the character, Dorothea Williams in the Oscar-winning animated Disney film, Soul. On Saturday, November 12, 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm, Fuller brings her towering talents to the August Wilson African-American Cultural Center (AWAACC), 980 Liberty Ave., to inaugurate the new Uhuru Jazz Series.

PITTSBURGH, PA, August 31, 2022 – Never just a stop on the circuit, Pittsburgh has long been a town that has grown jazz, cultivated it, celebrated it and called it its own. One need not look any further than the storied Hill District – once known as the “Crossroads of the World” and “Little Harlem.” To have walked down Wylie Avenue in its heyday, on any given night one might have moved from the Crawford Grill to the Savoy Ballroom to the Hurricane Club to the Bambola Social Club, grooving to the likes of Basie or Ellington, swooning over Ella, or bopping with Coltrane, Mingus, or Dizzy. It was all there. The spirit and energy of jazz was never just a visitor to Pittsburgh, but always a permanent resident of the city.

Presented by TRANSART & Cultural Services, Inc., and led by Guest Curator Craig Harris, the day-long festival celebrates the centennial of bassist/composer/bandleader Charles Mingus (1922-1979) with Harris, Buster Williams (pictured above), Regina Carter, Camille Thurman, Carla Cook, Michael King and Joaquin Pozo, who, in the spirit of Mingus, are taking the music forward.
